In order to disassemble a 1911, you have to take the recoil spring out from the front of the dust cover. You essentially rotate a retaining ring on the front of the dust cover, and if you aren't ready for it, the spring shoots out, along with the metal retainer on the end of it. It's been a while since I've done it, but that is essentially how I remember it.

Sorry Alex, but I've never had the muzzle pointed at my face during break down.

Part #24 is under pressure from part #25 and is held in place by part #2.
To disassemble, remove part #2 while maintaining pressure on part #24.
    He forgot that last bit.

I don't know the technical names for the parts, but there's a doodad that holds the thingee on the end of the spring. When you rotate the doodad, you have to maintain compression on the thingee at the end of the spring and let it up slowly. If you don't, then the spring projects the thingee. And if you're looking down the barrel, then the thingee hits you in the face.

Girlscouts? Hmmm, I don't know... I think it's kinda dangerous to teach young girls self esteem and leadership skills.
