"Why did you bring your gun?"
"I have a valid CCW permit... here it is, sir... and I felt it would be unwise to go outside at night to possibly interrupt criminals in the middle of a car theft unarmed. They are criminals, after all, obviously with no regard for their fellow man."
"And then you shot the victim, correct?"

The Denver area is pretty safe, but when I lived in Minneapolis there where places where you had to watch your car. I own a nice Del Sol and Honda's are their main choice. I was a part of MNsportcompacts and actually still am.
We had our first club meeting back in 1998 at a buddies house and three cars were broken into and stuff stolen out of them.. Next meeting after trusting all of the "Mods" of the forum, we set out night vision cameras, ran out caught the three kids, hog tied them, and called the cops. No guns were used, but the amount of people running out there surrounding them made the kids stop and drop to the ground.
There is some thefts I have heard of around the Aurora area, but feel comfortable with my Honda sitting outside with the alarm. I always have my gun on me, just because You don't know if you are approaching people with guns. That being said, I do not have my gun drawn and when I have approached people boosting cars I have made sure I in a spot where I can get behind another car if they happen to have a gun. 98% of the time it is just stupid kids boosting cd players etc..
Just make sure you park near a light.. that usually scares most of them off. Also install a $150 car alarm..
I'll keep God and my Guns....

If guns kill people, can I blame bad spelling on my pencil?

The bad guys will not be "keeping quiet." They will be telling the cops you pulled on them, perhaps create some appearance of racism if they can exploit it, and generally make it look like you are the bad guy. What happened may not be obvious to the cops who come out to investigate.
I'm of the mindset that you should establish a very simple, just-the-facts version of what went down so that the cops get a fair idea of who the real criminal is.
I wasn't thinking too much into that when I typed that response, but I wouldn't lawyer up immediately. Something like...

"Officer, thank God you're here. I'm the one that called this in.
I heard some strange noises outside that sounded like someone breaking into a car. I own the most expensive car on the lot and was concerned it might be mine they were after, so I went to check it out.
I was approaching my car and saw him sitting in the car with the door open and broken glass all over the ground. I yelled to him, 'Hey, get away from my car! I'm calling the cops!' and he jumped out of the vehicle and began raising his weapon towards me. In fear of my life, I drew and fired until I felt he was no longer a threat. Then I called you.
There's where I was standing, there's where he was standing, there's where his weapon fell to. His weapon, my weapon, and my car have not been touched since.
I want to be as cooperative as possible, officer, but I have heard stories of good guys getting sued for saying too much. This has never happened to me before (or this hasn't happened in a while) and I'm still a little shaken up. My attorney is on his way and as soon as he arrives I will be happy to give a statement with him there. Until then, I think I need to sit down and calm my blood pressure."

Very simple, DONT VOLUNTEER ANY INFO UNTIL YOUR WITH YOUR LAWYER.
The facts will come out and the cops already know that the POS crtiminals make things up.

The chances of someone shooting at you over your car are retardedly low. Car thieves are cowards.
Lot's of stupid in this thread by the way.

I'd be doing/feeling the same way as you Ronin, but I'd never encourage anyone else to act that way. That's just stupid. I've moved my car into another parking lot before.

... you guys make me so happy I own a rusted out, beat up early 90's Cherokee.

    So... so happy.

But to the OP, I hope your night is uneventful and you wake up to your sweet ride still in its original condition with nothing missing or damaged.

I would not doubt in the least you were being sized up for a break in, auto theft or carjack. The fact that it was Cali plates would make me even more suspicious. Unless you are willing to sit up all night and babysit the best idea is to park in a different and secure area. Unfortunately you can't do that every night.

Wasn't there a case here in CO. a few months ago where an older gentleman pulled a handgun on a couple of pepper bellies trying to steal a trailer out of his driveway and the old guy went to jail ? He was also charged and is still fighting in court or lost, I never did hear the outcome.
