Default geting a PTR91... now here comes the ammo part....

I didnt know that the stuff was so ridiculously pricey!!!!!

Any ammo thats priced less than 15 cents a round?
If not i might have to start to get into reloading... now the question is how do i reload? What do i need? Whats the best kit? What type of powder? Where is the best place to buy cheap supplys?

    Thanks Ahead of Time.

Almost everyone uses the South African surplus .308. It is about $26/140 rounds so about $0.19 a round. It is decent stuff and worked great in my JLD. Stay away from the Indian Surplus and South African Surplus dated 1981. The 1981 stuff is really gummy and will clog the fluted chamber rather quickly, about 75 rounds.

If you reload, stay away from "civilian" brass (IE" Winchester, Remington, etc). The action can, and will, rip the head off and it will take an act of god or a tool to remove the rest of the case from the chamber.

Check out aimsurplus.com for cheap 7.62 NATO. Portugese, SA, and IMI show up there often. And like the previous poster said, STAY AWAY FROM INDIAN!

Have you ever fired a semi-auto .308? After one of those 140 SA battle packs my shoulder and I were not on speaking terms for a day or two.

you need to get a better rifle
My wife puts 100 to 200+ through her M1A (used to be mine til she shot it and that was it, no longer mine) each time we go out.

Thats one of the problems with the 308 battlerifles these days-the ammo is getting harder to get. After the South African runs out I'm not sure what will be much available in surplus. I suggest getting it while you can.

I've also been experimenting with Russian steel case ammo in 308.
I've been using both Wolf and Silver Bear without any problems but
haven't shot that much of it. So far my HK-91, CETME, HK clones and M1A have been functioning ok.

I shoot a lot of the S. A. 140 rd. battle pack stuff out of my '91 and Socom 16 (and some peoples M-60's  ) with no problems. It seems to be the best the best deal around right now. I pick it up at the Tanner shows.

My FAL ate all the silver bear up (240 rnds from Sportsman's guide, they dont appear to be selling it anymore). The wolf I found for $5 a box at Sportsman's Warehouse worked fine, too.

I am, however, concerned with using too much .308 over time, as it's higher pressure than 7.62mm NATO specs (the opposite of .223 vs 5.56mmNATO). But so far so good!
