    Default Shipping to California

I'm looking to send a Beretta M9 to a friend of mine stationed at Camp Pendleton in California and I was wondering if anyone who has any experience shipping to California could give me some information. I know they have different laws and I'd like to make this as painless as possible

Also I'm looking for a FFL near Boulder that would be able to do transfer on my end.

    Thanks

You got your end right. It's and FFL to FFL situation. I believe it has to be overnighted but the local FFL should have that worked out. So finding a guy on your end comes first. Then the guy who's recieving it has to find his own FFL to accept it. He'll give them the info for yours which is mostly a fax number but other contact info will help. It then gets shipped out. He'll have paperwork to do once it arrives and that will start his 10 day wait. I think that covers it. Most of the work is on his end.

any FFL dealing with CA must be CA DOJ approved / on the list of approved ffl's to have dealings with CA. I was going to send a gun to our daughter in CA through a FFL here. I was told the cost of S&H + the CA crap would bring the cost over and beyond what she could purchase one there for. I tried 3 FFL's and was given the same info.

I would also make sure he has done all he needs to do on his end as far as the base is concerned with him
having a firearm on base. Does he live in the barraks? Does he know all that is entailed
on having your firearms on base as far as storage and ability to have access to it etc etc?

^True statements. When I was in a local shop we would not even deal with Kalifornia.

I totally forgot about that part. Very important you keep those mags since the recieving FFL can't let them go.

You DO NOT have to ship the firearm through an FFL, to an FFL. The requirement to have a CADOJ firearms approval number applies only to FFLs.

From the CADOJ website FAQ page:

    2. I am not an FFL but I want to ship a firearm to a California FFL. Do I have to obtain a Firearms Shipment Approval number before shipping a firearm to California?

No. The requirement to obtain a Firearms Shipment Approval number only applies to holders of valid FFLs.
While I think the whole idea of having to jump through hoops to ship to CA is ridiculous it really wasn't too much of a PITA to get registered with the DOJ and get approval numbers once you were registered. There is no additional cost to an FFL to get registered to ship to CA. Takes a few minutes on their (CADOJ) website.

Now, finding a CA dealer that will accept firearms from a non-licensed person may be the harder part. And CA dealers are notorious for pretty much raping people receiving transfers in fees and such. Plus they have a waiting period.

Which is why i went to an FFL. I have yet to locate a reasonable FFL in the area of CA our daughter lives. The one i have dealt with before when buying here guns said it was not worth the hassle and COST. He was also not willing to deal with non-ffl sending guns to him, again not worth the hassle and cost on my end. Why pay another $100 average between S&H and CA fees when i can pay the CA FFL price. Her FFL does LE discount all day long which saves her / me an easy $50-100 per.
