I got the belt growing up. My grandma in her 70's used the belt.
I preferred her since she was old and couldn't get the belt to crack the air when she swung. A spank isn't going to ruin a kid. But if you can't take away all their toys make them do yard work. A spanking maybe their last hope before they grow up to be horrible adults.

My take: Spanking or light slap are ok. There is physical contact, some shrink will tell you that it is the same transfer has giving a kiss or a hug. Using a proxy (belt, stick, ...) is too much.
