    Default If it ain't broke...

So I was discussing AK's on another site (and due to some severe head trauma that I don't remember and have no evidence of, I can't remember what site it was) and someone was asking about upgrading the handguard and replacing the rear sight with a rail, then came a wave of people saying things like "Mikhail would ask 'Why you not satisfied with my design? You modify already great rifle with plastic crap?'" And other comments about how it is fine the way it is. While I love modding my AR (just added the RVG not too long ago), my AK looks exactly like Mr. Klashnikov designed it to look (even if it's not a Soviet Avtomat). I don't get on people for modding, but I do think it looks tacky, sort of like if someone modified an M1 Garand and it no longer looked "original."
Am I alone here, or am I just gun-old fashioned?

I feel the same way. Especially firearms with historical significance. But that was severely tested when I saw this. I want this.

i too like the classic styling of wood and blued or parked or black painted steel. though i don't understand why people get all goofy about other people modding their on rifle. for what it's worth, Kalashnikov doesn't even like ak74's let alone 100 series ak's..... does that mean we shouldn't build ak74's or buy saigas? lol

I suppose it's a matter of taste too. When you see a ak with Tapco garbage hanging all over it, or a sks that bubba fixed up, or in the case of my dad's rifle, a 1917 Eddystone that he bought from a surplus sale back in the 70s. He borrowed the rifle to his buddy who decided to fix it up as a surprise to him. Put a wooden Monte Carlo stock, milled off the rear site, and replace the front site and then wondered why my dad wanted to beat him.

I'm not a fan of wood on my rifles. That AK posted above looks awesome to me. Except for the AR pistol grip. I'll take a hogue AK grip over almost any AR grip.

Do you guys hate on people who own AR's that don't have a fixed carry handle, A1 stock, and a standard hand guard?

OP, you sure you forgot what forum it was and just don't want to admit you post on /k/?

Nobody is hating on this thread yet. Not what I read anyway. It's probably more like this. For me. You buy a sks for $200. Then you convert it to take detachable mags. Possibly making it an illegal weapon in the process. (922r) Then you throw on a scope mount, a cheap scope, pistol grip, plastic stock, ect. All the time extolling the virtues of the sks over the ak. When what you should of bought is an ar15 which is more of a modular design.
When I see pictures like these, I don't like it. Sometime classic designs can be changed in a way that seems alright. But not usually to my taste.

When you get to modern rifles mod away.

It's so much easier to get a rifle that is more applicable to your needs than to throw tacticool plastic on something that was never meant to do what is asked of it. In a lot of the cases it doesn't work very well either. Scopes on sks, ak47s, extended mags on sks, by the time it's done it usually doesn't look natural and causes problems. I remember in the early 90s of all the "sniper" sks around for sale where I grew up. The nmh-91s were "sniper" rifles. It drives me crazy to see all the 1913 model rifles that were sporterized. But in the end it's not my rifle so do whatever to it. Every once in a while you'll see some one do something to a rifle like the draco above that causes you to make an exception.

You're right, "hate on" was poor wording on my part. But you mention what someone should have bought was an ar15. I bought a Saiga .223 because I can shoot whatever I want through it, I could build the rifle up how I wanted to without throwing down $600+ off the bat, and still have the most dependable configuration.
