If the power problem was an was one, it would be solved already. There's a lot of study going on in this area right now. Hell, even Metro is studying which oils produce the highest yields of biodiesel. Brazil is almost solely dependent on sugar cane for their power. They are making ethanol gas from it and then compressing the grindings into fuel bricks for use in power plants. Then there's a power plant (I think its in Japan) using old tires as a fuel source and they have figured out how to scrub the exhaust to zero pollutants. Problem is they won't sell or share the process to scrub the exhaust.
ultimately, any power is going to have a 'real cost'. Power isn't free, and can never be. The laws of thermodynamics cannot be disregarded, and there is always a cost in energy transfer.
