I own a $hit ton of firearms domains. I backordered ar-15.co when it came out in July 2011 and managed to secure it, among a lot of others.
I had it available, and (ar-15).(colorado) seemed to be the most appropriate domain I had for Colorado AR-15 Shooters

the domain registration came before the chicken, so there wasn't really any discussion or selection, it was just purposed.
For the record, arfcom is ar15.com.
I owned ar-15.com from 2006-October of 2011; I sold it to arfcom for quite a bit, though I'd rather have kept it I had to get things paid and take care of a lot of crap going on (and still going on).
I built and own 1911.COM which also died with this server failure, only it's data loss has been heavier. I put co-ar15 up first, now I'm working on recovering everything else. Ill still be working on this stuff for the next 72 hours at minimum.
