Less is usually more especially with polymer pistols. I'll put a light spray of clp or break free on a brush, run that on the slide, barrel, an frame. Then wipe that down with a rag. A couple drops of oil on slide making sure it'll contact the very small parts where it contacts the frame. Polymer pistols are vey low maintenance. I wouldn't drench any gun in anything.

As far as recommending a lube, I like the Hoppes that comes in the bottle with the needle on it. Very handy for getting it where it's needed.

Edit: I didn't mention cleaning the inside of the barrel. Do that. Barrel brush in the approprate caliber and a patch or two.

In general I think you want to avoid getting any lubricant into the firing pin channel area. It will pool in there and collect dust, dirt, and carbon from when you fire and start making mud from what I understand.

Firing pin and striker channels are best left dry for the aforementioned reasons.
Typically in other areas you just want enough oil to see a slight sheen, not drip or run.
I will usually apply a couple of drops and then hit it with the blowgun to spread it evenly and get the excess out.
Slides I tend to use a good quality gun grease sparingly. It resists displacing under the shear loads that a slide is in.

As I'm only familiar with Glocks and M&Ps, I can't say for sure regarding the XD. The user manual is usually pretty good at pointing out exactly where to oil.

That said, I'd certainly avoid oiling anything that would come in direct contact of an unfired cartridge.
