Bert, I have always put in a Viper 2 way system in my older cars, very good alarm and the talkback sends my keychain into a fit if anything happens. They aren't too expensive, installed at Best Buy for under $500.

I have a viper 5701 on mine. I believe you can even get the cellular addon to be able to activate it with an app.

Here's the cellular thing. It has 2 way communication through the app, GPS, and also provides DTCs of the car if needed
Another +1 for the Viper / Clifford units. Mine has great range and with the remote start (+$40) you can't beat it. Now they even give the option to remote start from your Iphone, don't think I would but still very cool.
Thanks for the tips guys.
We are going to go with a DEI system, they build Viper, Clifford, Avital and a couple others.
They basically build almost all of the alarm systems that are worthwhile.
We just need to sit down with the installer when we are ready and figure out which system will be best for the kiddo.
