Police found a silver handgun and an assault-style rifle as they searched a teal Ford Ranger pickup truck believed to belong to the suspect in an attempted robbery and possible hostage situation at the Safeway on South College Avenue this morning.
David Dubois, 19, of Fort Collins was arrested after he escaped from the store at 460 S. College in a Ford Ranger pickup truck. Officers found him sitting in the parked truck north of the corner of Whedbee and Oak streets.
A detective pulled a silver handgun and an assault-style rifle with a clip from the Fort pickup parked on Whedbee Street. Both weapons were loaded.
Dubois surrendered shortly after 11 a.m. at 218 Whedbee St., telling police he was coming off an methadone addiction, according to dispatch reports.
Dubois was the subject of an earlier suicidal call to police this morning when he called his mom at 10:01 a.m. from a residence on Bradbury Court to say goodbye. She reported he was emotional and had access to guns in the home. Dubois was gone from the residence when police and his mother arrived. Approximately 20 minutes later he entered the Safeway Store and robbed the pharmacy.
SWAT teams were called to the Safeway at 460 S. College, shortly before 10:30 a.m. after reports that a man with a mask and rifle had entered the store, said Fort Collins Police spokeswoman Rita Davis.
Shoppers and Safeway employees told the Coloradoan they heard at least two shots. Residents on the block where Dubois was arrested also reported hearing a "boom" or "bang."
Dispatch reports that shots were fired and a hostage taken at some point and have not yet been confirmed, Davis said.
Police are still sweeping the Safeway and nearby stores to ensure no other suspects are involved. It is unclear if anyone was injured.
Dubois was transported to Poudre Valley Hospital for evaluation before being transferred to the Larimer County Detention Center where he faces possible armed robbery and kidnapping charges.
