    Default ammunition question

still kinda new to the firearm scene. but does the saying "you get what you pay for" relate to bullets as well? lets disregard hollow point vs regular bullets. i'm asking because i'm looking online at .45 bullets and i see anywhere from 18.99-29.99 for a 50 ct box.

A box of what kind of .45 bullets? FMJ bullets are going to be a lot cheaper than a premium self defense bullet.

First, let's get the lingo correct. I suspect you're asking about ammo or cartridges, not bullets. Bullets are simply the projectile and that's important because this is also the reloading room and lots of us buy just bullets.

Anyway, that note aside, I would say if you're just out plinking or practicing with your 45 then get whatever is cheapest. I have bought everything from the really expensive stuff to the cheapest stuff I can find and all have gone bang (with the exception of a 380 Sellier and Bellot once. That was bad primer and that can happen even with the expensive stuff).

Some of the cheap steel case stuff actually has a form of lacquer on the case which some people say can build up in your chamber after a while. But you should be cleaning your gun after every trip to the range anyway so I am personally undecided if that's a problem or not. And I wouldn't suspect that to be a problem unless you were shooting 1,000's of rounds of that stuff anyway.

Personally I reload so I use my own ammo for everything but my self defense ammo. For self defense, I wouldn't get the cheapest ammo. But more important than price regarding self defense ammo, buy a few different kinds and try them all out to make sure you gun likes them. Some guns don't like some ammo. The good self defense ammo can cost $2/round...

Last note, buy in bulk if you can. You will get a better deal.

If i dont have anything that i've loaded up to shoot which is rare, i usually buy the cheapest I can find as long as it isnt steel.

Until you put a mountain of ammo downrange, the quality won't matter.

I shot probably close to 10k of steel cased Wolf through one of my Glocks, rarely cleaning. It turns out it's some of the most accurate factory ammo, too

If I hadn't started reloading (at $0.10/round), I'd still be shooting Wolf.

That said, Walmart will almost certainly be your best bet for cheap ammo. You can try the steel there for cheap. It won't harm your guns. AIM Surplus is also good for larger orders.
