I've liked the hippies I've met, well, that were "true" hippies. Hippies are just another group that fell to the retardation of a many... The original, from what I can tell, and what my parents were, and their close friends back in the days, just didn't give a f*ck. They didn't protest, many owned guns, they just wanted to be left alone to their own whateverthefuck... They didn't like the protesting whiners that ended up coming out of the group...

doesnt believe in sleeping in a bed? wtf? lemme guess he just crashes on peoples couches? haha

my idea is very negative, altho i have met several older true hippies who were much more agreeable and likeable folks..

-doesnt understand politics, so therefore they always lean left hard because everyone should be taken care of.
-tells everyone how green they are and points out any un-green things people do around them
-doesnt own a car, bikes everywhere and breaks tons of traffic laws like a douche
-owns nothing but goodwill clothes and tells you your stupid for paying more for new clothes
-doesnt believe in western medicine.. what ever the hell that means
    -does acid and smokes weed
-doesnt work hard, calls anyone who works hard evil
-they think the dumbest things are super cool, so they waste whatever money left on garbage
    -smell
    -listen to horrible music

Wow, sounds like a fair description of about half of the population of Trinidad.
Now I wonder what percentage of the students attending TSJC fall into the hippie catagory??

TSJC = Trinidad State Junior College.

I have long hair.... but if you called me "hippie" I sincerely doubt anyone would find your remains.... just saying.

Also have a rather bushy beard, ride a Harley, live in the mountains and have been known to wear and make things from fur and leather on occasions, typically gathered from the animals I've killed for sustenance and livelihood.

Have met several who would be considered true 'hippies'.... though they're kind hearted individuals, I kind of consider them fodder depending on hypothetical occurances. The "true" version of these docile, puny folk don't often have much of an offending odor. Perhaps because they're as close to nature as I am.... but they're too busy picking berries and herbs to know that deer and elk are damn good eating.

The "psuedo-hippies" seem to have one hell of an odor though, despise my hunting habits and often make the mistake of voicing such opinions where I can hear them.... and then find out why I'm called Badger.

Peace sells.... but who's buying? (And yes, I listen to metal too..... if you don't like long hair, leave this long haired country boy alone, and you'll fare far better.)

Considering these are people I tend, only by choice of music (some), to associate and hang out with (a lot of my friends fit this category, but alas I do not- and will throw heavy, hard objects at you if you call me one):
Olden day hippy (aka my mother): born in the 40's/50's, attended college during or before the Vietnam war, had friends drafted in said war, protested said war, smoked pot, played crappy music in the quad or listened to crappy music in the quad, typically likes the Grateful Dead, spreads silly concepts like free love and peace, poly-amorous by nature, stood their ground for a just cause (end the war in Vietnam), 90% chance of homemade clothes.

Modern day hippy: born in the late 70's-mid 90's, listens to jam bands, 80% chance of vegetarian or vegan, liberal, does copious amounts of LSD, smokes copious amounts of pot, general lazy attitude, stands for socialism and the welfare state, usually blindly follows Obama, spread silly concepts like socialism, love, and peace, probably drives a Prius or Subaru station wagon and has either OBAMA\Biden or COEXIST stickers (or both), owns a mac and proclaims it's superiority in every way in the most smug manner (same with their Prius), 75% chance of being a PETA supporter, believes in entitlement without cause or effort, generally has or is working on getting some kind of liberal arts or philosophy degree, doesn't want to pay for college, 90% chance of homemade clothes, 60% chance of having dreads, owns at least one flat bill with several festival pins attached, has been to more than 2 music festivals in the last 9 months, talks with a lot of "brah's", "dudes" and "chill". Probably paints, sells pipes/blows glass, or owns bongos or all of the above; believes republicans are "evil;" believes in free speech as long as your views are parallel to theirs; idolizes Steve Jobs; only knows Lars Ulrich as "That greedy guy that got Napster shut down;" cannot tell you who Axl Rose is; doesn't shower regularly; smells of pot and/or patchouli; idolizes Jerry Garcia; can vividly give you walking directions from anywhere in the Denver metro area to either Sancho's or Quixote's, or both.
I think that sums it up... I might have forgot a few things though...

There are many subsets of the "hippie" culture.

TRUE hippies aren't political at all (part of the "tune in, turn on, drop out" philosophy). But frankly there are very few TRUE hippies left ... most are just smelly Grateful Dead/Phish fans that like to smoke pot and vote for Democrats. The closest thing you'll find to real hippies are Rainbow Family people. Most of the Rainbow Family folk I've met are nice people who would give you the shirt off their back, but you wouldn't want it 'cause it'll stink.

Hipsters have come to annoy me more than hippies because the hipsters are intensely politically active.

If you just wanna wear tie-die, hang out with your "old lady" listen to crappy music and smoke pot, that's fine with me ... just don't try to impose your beliefs on me via the political system.
Modern liberalism is based on the idea that reality is obligated to conform to one's beliefs because; "I have the right to believe whatever I want".

Girlscouts? Hmmm, I don't know... I think it's kinda dangerous to teach young girls self esteem and leadership skills.
