Seriously there's a LOT of ammunition and components laying around (and smokeless powder is not that hard to make) so that even 15 years after a major collapse there would be plenty of functional guns and ammo out there.

+1 THIS. Ever see that old Star Trek, where Kirk and the Gorn (lizardman) captain are placed on a movie set/planet to fight to the death? The slowpoke stupid Gorn just chases Kirk around until Kirk can find the components for gunpowder and build a "hand cannon" and blow the Gorn away. I think this was where they got the idea for "McGuyver"!

I want to know who the writer is for this. I had this idea years ago, the scary part was that people never figured it out and they all died. Sorry Will Smith will not be saving us this time.
