Lineman apprenticeship is a 5 year program to be a card carrying journeyman.
The first two years is mostly grunt and gopher work, along with 10 -15 hours of classroom training a week for the entire program on your own time.
If your are totally insane or exceptionally brave to be able to work with voltages that can kill you without contact, go for it.

I've done some telephone line work. On a nice day, it's not bad. You're outside, doing something pretty cool.
Bad weather though, and you'll curse the day you were hired.

I have 2 friends that were linemen....but that was in the NFL so I don't think that is what you were asking
