Go to JM Tire on Commercial street in Trinidad. Talk to Joe, he's a good guy and will give you a good deal. If he isn't around his wife Angie can help you, she's usually in the office keeping the dogs under control.
Joe does good work and takes a lot of pride in his shop. Plus, if you ever have an issue you can talk directly to the owner and not some underpaid store manager.
Having been a previous part owner of a couple of Big O Tire stores there is something you need to know. Most are independently owned (franchised). The individual owners are supposed to follow corporate policies on pricing and purchasing but many follow their own lead. Sometimes straying works fine, and other times it drives them out of business. Additionally you have sales people and managers that are probably incentive based pay. Meaning they get paid more for the more they sell or the more profit they make.
Unfortunately this is common in the auto service industry as a whole and it breeds a type of behavior that is commonly seen in the used car industry.
The best thing you can do is inform the Owner of the establishment where you were trying to give business to and explain why you are upset. Many owners will care and try and change things. Some won't. The ones that won't are the ones you want to avoid.
Unfortunately all mechanics are also not equal and some of the best mechanics work at a place that has a bad sales person or manager. Because a great mechanic is very hard to find, sometimes you just have to deal with the sales person or manager.
FWIW... Some vehicles REQUIRE REPLACEMENT OF ALL 4 TIRES at the same time or damage will occur in either the transfer case in AWD vehicles and in the newer 2009 and newer vehicles to the traction control/brake/transmission.
Some companies instead of taking a chance and trashing one of these vehicles will make it company policy to insist that all vehicles replace all 4 at the same time as a CYA. This is very similar to large company policies like Wal-Mart and them never switching sizes.
People are so sue happy these days as well as the electronics involved in today's newer vehicles... companies just don't want the liability.
Regarding pricing/gouging:
Pricing for tires is set regionally and there are cards with fixed prices that should be displayed next to the tires. Locations that don't post these prices are probably ones to avoid. Since it has been over 10 years since I was with Big O things might have changed a bit. In the last 2 years tire prices have risen through the roof everywhere. Tires took a 30% cost increase twice last year!!
I will now give you all some words of wisdom from someone who worked in the tire/auto industry for over 20 years:
Prices are not fixed... they can be negotiable. Don't be cocky or a jerk or you will get charged more.
A box or donuts in the morning or a pizza around lunch time will buy you a staff that will help you out. (cheap insurance)
Lastly ask nicely, "Can you help me out with the price... That is a bit much?" (It will work almost every time!)
I say lets all remove the warning labels and let nature take its course.
The mechanics are they ones that told me about other, better places. Since I live here and bring my 3 cars in alot. They told me that they just like screwing people because its right off I25 & there aren't alot of options.& 2 of the guys said they were looking for new jobs because of it.I even gave a puppy to one of the mechanics last month.I'm thinking about sitting out front with a signOr renting a billboard. Its not about the money(kinda) but i'm tired of people doing shit like this.
Red,White & Blue means Freedom, until its flashing behind you.
None of the big tire stores here will let me ransack their wheel weights, even if I buy tires from them. That's really the important issue.
