I've seen lots of ammo go up in a fire. It just pops. There might be a slight shrapnel danger if you're VERY close to it...like within inches. In which case you have far greater things to worry about. It doesn't send the projectile at x thousand feet per second because it's not contained. It's no big deal and there's no reason to freak at the sound of the pops...which don't even sound like gunfire.

There are far more dangerous things in your home than ammo...like gas cans, aerosol cans, certain chemicals which can be poisonous, etc... I think the firefighters were being a little melodramatic.
