I agree that less Government is better. Less intervention is better. But not at the expense of a child's life. The line comes in at defending those that cannot defend themselves.

    OR

Intervention now might prevent the kid from being dependent on social welfare programs all of his/her life because mommy and Daddy gave him Emphysema/Asthma/whatever, now he cannot work and you have to pay for it.

    Take your pick.

I am offended by this comment. . It's not just white folks.

So would you not intervene some how if some dude was beating on his wife? oh wait there's laws against causing bodily harm to someone... 10-4

It's already illegal in 4 states and many more are considering similar legislation.

Let's also tax the lead in bullets while we are at. Lead is also dangerous.

    Default Smoking in a car.

I get so mad when I see people smoke in their car with kids of any age. I smoked for years and never once did I smoke around my kids. It is not their fault I had a filthy habit. I agree tax the crap out of cigarettes until they are 20 bucks a pack. It should also be illegal to smoke in a car with kids, that is such a low life thing to do.

They had been smokers and some were still puffing on their cancer sticks while slowly moving their walkers up and down the hallways just waiting to meet the Grim Reaper. It was their choice but still the tax payers were having to help pay for some of their damn expensive treatments. They had most likely been warned but decided to take up the habit anyway. The smoking discussions will be around for a long time with no end in sight. I have three offspring (now adults) who have never smoked and I believe it was mainly because I had strongly impressed them at a young age to not start the nasty habit.
OK, flame away but please don't use the flame to light one up.
The point was missed. I was trying to say lets regulate other things that are not healthy. By the way both of the things I mentioned have their own ward in a hospital. It is the pulmonary ward. And heart disease causes more death then cancer.

Can we all agree that smoking is bad for your health? Yes? Good! So is living in the city, using a cellular phone, sitting within two feet of a computer, watching TV, using the microwave, driving a car, breathing, taking a shower... everything is potentially a deadly activity. Hell I could die just sitting on my couch watching a hunting show on TV! The point is, and I see both sides of the argument, that while yes, the OP's story shows how terrible parents smoking in the car with infants are, but there should be no laws or other liberty restricting mandates put forth to make anything regulating behavior a legal matter. Once that happens then it might not stop. First we started with texting (this I agree though) but what next? No talking on the phone without a handsfree device like they have in many states already? Then it could spit ball further- no eating, no talking to passengers, no smoking? Remember this is our government we're talking about, they've tested it for years and now they're just like that story: If you give a mouse a cookie.... he's gonna ask for a glass of milk. Don't give them an inch, you know they're going to take a mile!

Again, the point is missed. Salt causes heart disease, as does being over weight from eating and drinking too much high fructose corn syrup. If we are going to tax smoking because of the health risks why should we stop there?

I see that my point was also missed. OK, you can sit close to me in a restaurant (but not TOO close - please) and salt the hell out of your food and guzzle all the soda you want (loaded with that HF corn syrup) but it will NOT be bothering me even a little bit compared to someone's stinking/offensive smoke drifting down in my direction. Yes, some States still allow smoking in eating establishments.
I guess that I am not educated enough to get my point across so that it is worded in a way that is easily understood. Sorry bout dat.
