Easy 8 day trip with lots of time to spend in the area.

But go to the north rim rather than the south rim. Not as touristy, less crowded. Course, all of the attractions are on the south rim side.

Was just there a bit over 12 hours ago. FWIW, it seems half of Arizona as a "no guns" sign on it. Got tired of disarming and finally decided to just honor their requests and keep my gun (and money) away...

Anyway, I went along the south side, did a short loop along the rim of the canyon and back to the south of the buildings. Very worthwhile, I'll be back to do the full hike. I can't vouch for the north side as I didn't make it there with the time I had.

AZ is Open Carry,BUT the north of the state is tribal land where you cannot carry, and technically, cannot have a gun with you ... period.

Don't know if anyone mentioned it, but i would suggest going to the North Side, less touristy.

Take the scenic route maybe from Moab south to Page (if I am remembering correctly)
and visit Page, Moab, Durango, 4 Corners to name a few. Id also try to go to Monument Valley and even hit Zion or Bryce Canyon on the way back.
Dont go to either first because the Grand Canyon will be a dissapointment then.

its not a bad trip...my wife and I did it a couple of years ago in like 5 days.

We started out driving south to Great Sand Dunes, just checked it out and left. Then went on to Mesa Verde and spend the night there. We were going to stop by 4 corners but it was closed, then we drove to the Grand Canyon stayed there for 2 nights. From there we went to Moab and checked out Arches and Canyonlands. Then we went through GJ and down to Black Canyon of the Gunnison, and back home. Lots of driving but it was fun checking out all the parks.

Just got back friday night from that exact trip. 4 days 1820 miles. 4 adults and an 8 month old.
I rented a suburban and we all had a great time. Stayed in hotels 2 nights and camped in tents 1.

Saw the sand dunes, mesa verde, grand canyon, canyonlands, and arches national parks.
Camped in canyonlands which was really cool.

Also saw 4 corners. $3 a person and its on the indian reservation

Buy aannual pass. It will pay for itself.

Ill post more tomorrow. Got to sleep!

About 12 years ago, my brother and I did it in 9 days in a '71 VW camper van. We camped on the North rim. The side that isn't all touristy. We were on National Forest type trails up there, but there are probably good RV campsites around. Beat the shit out of my VW. We barely made it home.

We hit 4 corners and stopped near Durango to do some fishing. It was freaking awesome.

We didn't kill each other, but we did have lots of, ummm, herbal relaxants at the time.

You guys will be fine in an RV. The kids will love it! Do it and have fun!

The Durango/Silverton train ride is a great time. But you have to book it way in advance. I can't remember how expensive it is, but I'd ride it again. There's also train from Antonito, CO, to Chama, NM.
