This was my first thought too.
Actually the Fed owns most of our shit (debt) to the tune of 1.88 Trillion dollars. China owns a mear 1.16 Trillion and isn't really loaning anymore.
And as one of my good clients who frequents China a lot said, don't fool yourself, they are very much Capitalists.

The problem isn't so much with China OWNING the theater but using it for their "soft propaganda" machine, this is what the story is about more than anything else.
