    Default Something I learned Yeasterday

When a 2" tug strap snaps it can hurl a 3/4" clevis about 35 yards, when slingshoted by a 10.5mm dynamic rope, with enough force to go through a metal strand fence.

Glad it was a fence and not someone's head.

my dad had a buddy who died from a similar situation. the strap snapped, the hook or clevis(whatever he was using) came through the cab of the tractor. hit him right in the head.

if winching or pulling someone or something out. always lay a coat or heavy blanket or like item on the chain, strap or rope. it usually eliminates this kind of thing from happening.

Coming from the [rock]crawling world... tow straps/cables can kill. Make sure people are behind decent sized trees and chit or at a safe distance if you need to pull or winch. It helps of you drape a heavy coat over the line, absorbs the shock when it snaps.
I've seen a tow strap snap at the rear vehicle, shoot forwards and the hook at the end end up in the passenger seat of the front vehicle.

I didn't say anyone was hurt or in harms way. Yet, blankets/coats will dampen winch lines. I only use winch rope anymore.

This situation involved pulling a tree in a specific direction, using a moving truck. A winch would not take in line fast enough. Ran the line from the tree, through an anchor point (tug strap and clevis), to the truck. The truck was angled off to the side of the fall line with a safe run out.

I have seen winch hooks shot through back and front windows. This was the first equipment failure I have ever had. Everyone walked away with nothing more than a good story to tell.
