Coupling straps together is scary just for what youve seen now. 2 solid point, and one strap, strap itself should fail, just falls to the ground, much like cutting winch rope. Clevis etc connecting 2, can be very scary.

FWIW, done exactly what you are talking about, with dropping trees, works well usually. Just have the clevis close to the tree trunk and its much safer.

if winching or pulling someone or something out. always lay a coat or heavy blanket or like item on the chain, strap or rope. it usually eliminates this kind of thing from happening.

Exactly. And put it closer to what you are pulling. That way it something snaps, it is longer than half-way for the strap/chain/cable to get back to you.
