    Default Audiophile question

I have a Denon AVR-3300 that I purchased new in '99 that continually overheats and has been back to Listen Up twice and they can't seem to fix it. It is technology limited (no HDMI) and I'm thinking it has outlived it's usefulness.

My knowledge on A/V equipment is 10+ years old and I would like to get a comparable replacement. It will driving 5 B&W speakers and a Velodyne sub-woofer, Sony LCD and Blu-ray will be connected as well. This will mainly be used mainly as a home-theater receiver.

I would like to keep the replacement @ $400 - I don't know if Denon is a good name any longer but I would sure appreciate some recommendations for quality equipment.

Part of the problem is going to be your $$ limit. There are some Denon and Yamaha units that are in that price range but they are at the bottom of the scale.

Upper end by both are still good products as are the newer Marantz but all are in the $1000+ range.

I myself for HT use Yamaha and have never had an issue.

I spent $900 on the Denon, I was hoping I could keep the next one a bit lower but it doesn't look like I'll be able to get comparable quality. It looks like my ammo fund will go a little light if that is the case

Have you looked online (forums, etc.) for suggestions as to the cause? Is it a known issue with this model? Have you talked to any denon people about it?

I think you may come close to your budget in the used category, but it will be tough indeed. Nothing wrong with Yamaha, but driving B&W speakers I'd probably want something a bit more.

You can look at AudioAdvisor's site as they have demos/clearance/used components at decent prices sometimes. I know they had a killer deal on a nice Cambridge Audio unit a while ago. Good luck!

    Default Sony 5.1 system

SONY STR-K7000 multichannel AV receiver - I have one of these, it pumps some Bose Acoustimass speakers. Not really loud, but the last thing I want to do blow the speakers! Works good for my little living room. Only has one HDMI output...connected to a Sony Bravia 40" LCD TV. I bought it 5 years ago from Circuit City for $365...;it was a display item with no remote...i bought a Universal remote on ebay for $25

Sony DVD player with HDMI is awesome. One cable for the Audio/Video connection. If the cable is under 6' , you can get away with a really cheap HDMI cable for less than $6

One on ebay for $100 with $28 shipping

ebay item 370593196657 or this one

But then that is not a piece of home audio gear. Not to many home pieces have XLR's in the back.

I'm running three Onkyo receivers currently and they work fantastically. Onkyo also has a website where you can get some great deals on reconditioned receivers too that's worth checking out. I've had several w/great luck. Here's a direct link to their currently available receivers. I've seen some real decent receivers on this site for around $300 that will likely do what your receiver did and gobs more so long as your power needs aren't super high. If you need lots of power then you're looking at more expensive receivers.

Edit: Looks like your current receiver is 140 watts so that shouldn't be terribly expensive in something newer with newer technology.
