Where we live in NW Loveland we have a herd that comes down every year and congregates in a field near our house. It usually consists of a dozen or so young bulls and a handful of does. Pretty impressive to see in person until all the 'town folk' starts clogging up traffic to get a look. I find it hilarious when some of the aforementioned city folk will get out of their cars with camera phone in hand and approach the elk w/o a care in the world. I mean, they'll get 15' from the things and not even realize how much danger they could be in with a bunch of young males starting to ramp up their hormones. It's best to view from a distance.
