Yorktown

Took these on the Yorktown and Sneakerd just reminded me that I was going to post them but forgot. The bad: had to take them with the phone, there is way too much stuff in there to photograph all of it, the USS Clamagore was closed for maintenance, and it was dumping when I got on the flight deck. Anyways if anyone is interested here's a few and the link to the rest:

The USS Yorktown had the number 10 painted on her flight deck, she was an early Essex- class carrier built during WW2. Retired in the 70's? and eventually moored at Patriot's Point in Charleston, SC, where she is a floating museum.
Numerous rare warbirds parked on her hangar deck, including an SBD Dauntless, an F4F Wildcat, F6F Hellcat, B25 Mitchell, several more.

First saw this ship in Yokusaka,Japan in 1968.My ship,the USS Bennington relieved it from the Gulf of Tonkin.(Viet Nam) I went aboard it in Charleston,S.C. in 1997 I think.

The Yorktown is an awesome ship. You should also check out Fort Sumpter. Top two places that I have visitedin SC.

One of the coolest places I have been! Have you seen the Hunley submarine? That thing is awesome. (I think that's how it's spelled.)

That's awesome! I've always wanted to see the Yorktown and the Intrepid (although the latter requires a trip to NYC... blah!). Really cool with the aircraft on deck and I love that machine shop paint job!

For you history buffs, a friend of mine just got back from France about two weeks ago and got to see the Omaha beach memorial, the Sainte-Mère-Église memorial, Pointe du Hoc and Pegasus Bridge historical sites, and even got to travel a bit and see the Maginot Line. Pretty neat little history trip there if you ever get the chance.

My old mans best friend served as one of the dentist's on that carrier during 68/69. He got to see the world, then got transferred to great lakes...flmao.

Haven't seen the Hunley or D-Day beaches yet, both definitely on the list though (France might take a bit longer to get to on the current budget though )

I grew up in Charleston . That brings me back. Yes there is lots of history in that town. Charleston is also the #1 spot for fossils hunting.
