    Default My chimney blew down!

I was at work a couple days ago, and my wife called to tell me that our chimney blew over. At first, she thought a tree had fallen on the roof, because of the terrible sound. She climbs a ladder, and finds this:

Tried my hand as a brick mason today. The existing mortar had basically degraded to dirt (that's it all over the roof). All the bricks down to roofline were dislodged, and came off:

After about 912 trips up and down the ladder with mortar, I ended up with some kind of impressionist's version of a chimney. The cap had blown to the ground and was bent up pretty bad.

That is admttedly the ugliest chimney I've ever seen. Good thing I don't make my living as a mason!

I see you went with the pre-weathered look. Hey, it's far better than anything I could have pulled off.

Watch out for leaks. The flashing doesnt look like it will seal well.

Yeah, I just re-used the old bricks and cap. I figured putting up a brand new chimney would be kinda like putting diamond earrings on a turd.

Will be watching! The flashing installed with the last roof is crap, but I didn't want to pull up the shingles to get it off. I'll put more flashing sealant on it. What could go wrong?.....

Ok, that's 2 bits of advice about the flashing. Looks like I'll be back on the roof On my next day off. Thanks for the advice, guys, I'll take it!

Hey as a professional mason I'll give you a "good job" pat on the back. I've seen guys who claim to be masons that couldn't do as well. Sad as that may be.

I also do a lot of repairs on repairs homeowners made where I need to remove a large amount of Calk/glue/Spackle before I can start the real repairs. Yours is going to last another 80 years anyways.

Also what was already said as far as the flashing going to leak is very true.

Make that THREE recommendations about the flashing. I'm gonna tar the hell out of it! Thanks for the kind (generous) words
