Default Using red dot with night vision scope?

I just had a guy ask me a question that I've not encountered and having been away from night vision scopes for a while, I thought I would ask here.

Question is: Is there a night vision scope that can be used with a red dot?

My initial thought is "No". I would think that the light spectrum of the night vision scope would totally negate being able to see the red dot.

Additionally, I would think that getting the two sights in alignment would be near impossible unless they were specifically designed to go together.

He is looking at this for an AR platform.

    Thanks for any help guys.

Well, that is the difference between the Eotech XPS/EXPS 2 and 3 series, and the Aimpoint H1/T1. The more expensive units are night vision compatible. Though they were originally designed to be used with NVG, not scope.

In theory, if you can get them lined up, it should work. Just have to find the right mounts, etc.

If the red dot has the setting for use with NVG's, then yes. Most Aimpoints and the EO Tech's (minus the XPS-2 series) are NV compatable.

You can absolutely run night vision optics in line with certain red dots.

I have looked through a Aimpoint T1 behind a PVS14.. I saw a dot - it was small and ugly and hard to see but I saw it.

What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?

    It can be done.

However, dedicating your nightvision to your rifle means that you have to point your gun at anything you want to look at or manipulate the attachment/detachment methods multiple times during the course of the night.

If you're going to shell out the cash for NODs you might as well drop another $700 on an class 1 IR laser and do it right.

If you choose to go this route place the nod in front of the scope if possible to minimize a permanent burn on the nods. I recommend
    Nods+redot= IR laser
    Nods+scope= Nod infront of scope.

Jerry something else to consider is how far will you/your friend be shooting?
There are NVG dedicated rifle scopes with true mil dot reticles and they are illuminated.
Night Optics D-740 (manual gain version) this has 4x magnification and other variations include more magnification.
The PVS-14 is great because it is so versatile. Hand held, weapon mount and helmet mount.
On Aimpoints & Eotech's there are usually several settings to be used in NVG mode. The Aimpoint T1's have 4 NV Settings while EOTech's have 10 NV Settings.
For the best weapon mounting system we have found the Alamo Four Star D-LOC works the best with aimpoint or eotech. It is a simple one handed - quick detach system. We have NVG's in our store if you or your friend would like to come take a look sometime.
