Does anybody have any input on silencers? How much do they really reduce the bang? Titanium verses steel or aluminum? What is a good make? I am looking to silence a 223 Ar and a 22 CZ.
    Thanx for your input.

I have several cans. One Surefire 556 can and another Surefire Model 212 556 can on order. As you probably know you have to keep the speed of the bullets below 1100 feet per second (approximately depending on altitude) to keep from getting the crack when the bullet breaks the speed of sound. I like my cans because they get rid of most of the muzzle blast noise and I can shoot my rifles without hearing protection.
The weight difference goes to what they are made out of. Titanium being lighter than steel but the Titanium can usually cost more than the steel. Another place to compare cans and get more info is www.silencertalk.com Warning - once you buy one suppressor you will want more. I have three on hand with two more ordered awaiting the paperwork and still thinking about when I can buy one more for my 338.

    Default Bang

Can you shoot standard reloads without ear protection? They are around 3250 feet per second.

I would not suggest any shooting w/out adequate hearing protection.
They Suppress not Silence the round. ESPECIALLY with 22's Bolt actions will be quieter than semi's, rim fire quieter than center.
Alan of Machine Gun Tours rents Class 3 items see if he does same for cans.
OR offer to supply ammo (and clean) a few guns, i'm sure a few will offer their NFA items to road test.
Down side to having suppressors, the clean up. Rimfires suck
Easiest clean up is on my piston 5.56 guns.

Try to test hear whatever you are thinking of buying. Check with the local dealers to see if the will demonstrate them for you, on your gun or one like it if possible. Do Not go by a internet videos. They all sound quiet on the internet.

I have three silencers currently. Unless my experience changes I won't be getting any more. My experience so far shows I still need to wear hearing protection when I use them. I know my hearing is more sensitive to loud noise than most people so you may be OK that way. All of my shooting so far has been inside. I am hoping that is the reason they aren't quiet enough for me.

    Have Fun

Also be aware that you be throwing down $500 to $1000 and not getting your silencer for 6 months to a year. Damn bureaucracy!

You are still going to have the supersonic crack. And that noise alone will take a toll on your hearing over time.

When I shoot with a can I still wear plugs, but they arent shoved half way to my brain stem.

Thank you all for your input. If I decide on a can I will let you know what I purchased and how I like it.
    Thanx again.
