    Now that he's fine, let this be a lesson to us all. Be careful, follow the rules as much as possibe,, with the realization that there may be no such thing as a safe line for the muzzle, and what-if this a bit. What would you rather deal with, a hassle at the hospital, or death/loss of limb and a hassle at the hospital?

    My life and limbs > my CCW permit or NFA gear (if I had any, which I don't).

    That's the crazy part, they were JHP. The bullet passed through his leg (causing minimal damage considering) then into the car door, broke the window and did not completely pass through the door- there is a dent on the outside of the door where it struck...

    That's not that crazy. Your brothers leg, that close to the surface didn't provide enough resistance for the round to expand as designed (luckily).

    If you take the paneling off the door you'll probably find that the round hit part of the door's internal frame (which is what stopped it).

    That's one of the reasons cars suck, both as cover and to shoot people through. It's almost impossible to predict what the round is going to do once it hits.

    Do you happen to know what round (manufacturer, model, weight) he was carrying?
