Question LE asking about MMJ in non-MMJ state because of CO plates?

I thought this was a bit odd...

My wife recently drove from CO to Iowa. While in Iowa, she was pulled over for speeding. The officer asked her (I'm paraphrasing):
I see you're from Colorado. Do you have a medicinal marijuana card? Is there any marijuana in the car?
My question is, does being from an MMJ state give an out-of-state LE resonable cause to suspect that there is marijuana in the car? I assume that an LE could ask that question regardless. No harm done; she was issued a citation for speeding, and she was on her way.

I don't think it's a big deal, I'm just curious as to what other people think. I found the conversation quite odd.

And no, she does not have a card, and she was not holding.

What you already said basically, they often ask if you have any illegal weapons or drugs in the car. The proper response is to roll your eyes and say, "Well, you're a police officer, have you tazed any old ladies today?"

I can see it being a reasonable question, especially in Iowa. Very staunch anti MJ state.
My wifes ex boss's son got popped there for a couple of ounces when he was in high school. The only thing that saved his ass from a felony conviction was daddy was a district judge and "greased the wheels".
I am sure more than a few states are quite aware that the majority of MMJ cardholders are a joke.

It's not against anyone's rights to ask if you have anything illegal...if they answered yes then that person is dumb.

Everybody knows boulder is in colorado, college with the most drug problems nation wide. And with all the med mmj crap and stinkin hippies i am suprised other states LE dont sit at the border and search every car leaving colorado. I am so sick and tired of going to houses at work and opening their door only to smell mmj was just used then i smell like it all day.

    Thanks all. I'm not alone!

It just threw me off with the mention of MMJ during the stop.

Well it's not a huge surprise, considering all of the states that have laws regarding MMJ we have the most dispensaries and users- that John Denver wasn't kidding when he was talking about Rocky Mountain HIGH!

I'm just getting sick of being pigeonholed just because a) I'm from Colorado, and b) I snowboard- immediately everyone I meet from places not-CO assumes I smoke weed... Uh no, not since my silly youth.
