    Default 5.56 or Heavier Caliber?

I'm having a hard time deciding what I want. I would love to have a heavier caliber round for shooting people or animals, but there are a lot more 5.56 rifles out there.

5.56 is a lot cheaper to shoot, but it seems pretty wimpy though. Help em decide! I don't plan on shooting ver far. A few hundred yards at most.

    300 Blackout.
What is my joy if all hands, even the unclean, can reach into it? What is my wisdom, if even the fools can dictate to me? What is my freedom, if all creatures, even the botched and impotent, are my masters? What is my life, if I am but to bow, to agree and to obey?

I was going to mention this as well.

Personally I would get the 5.56 and practice with the cheaper ammo, and have the 300blk barrel to swap out.

i had the same problem but .223 is so widely available. if it ever came to the point where you did have to "shoot people" where do you think you will find 300 blk. i went with a 1x7 twist so i can sling 77gr SMK's. i am working on a second upper in 7.62x40WT. i believe its a better compromise than 300 blk. with my cmmg kit it have a 3 caliber system with 2 uppers and 2 bolts. just my 2 cents.
BTW when i think of having to "shoot people" i think end of society/mad max scenerio. if you just need to protect you and yours at home 75 grain TAP is all youll ever need.

Post that build up when you are finished!

Well...since 300 blk is just a reformed (trimmed and expanded) .223 case, I think it makes perfect sense to run this round as well...and since EVERY part of the rifle except the barrel is the same between .223 and .300 blk on the AR platform, parts will be plentiful. Stock up on powder and bullets for .300blk and .223, get a set of dies for both and you can create whichever round you need with already plentiful .223 brass.

Go to google and type in "5.56 wound" and that should put your worries to rest.

Yeah that was disgusting............. I have seen worse floating around the web. It is all about the aim though........

300 BLK is not that expensive even if you don't reload. I have both a 300 BLK and a 5.56 and an extra barrel in 5.56 for the 300 BLK just in case. Gathering up some 300 BLK supplies just for the evil pony invasion. Why not have both?

It's all about the tumble. I'm planning on doing the same, going to SBR my KAC lower and pick up a 300blk upper and suppressor.

Whew, good thing dinner is still a few hours away...

I have a 6.8x43 AR along with my 5.56 and most of the parts are interchangeable. Only difference is the barrel, bolt, and magazines. That being said, if I had to grab only 1 rifle and head for the hills, it would certainly be my 5.56 for the following reasons:

Amount of ammo I already have
    Cost of ammo
    Availability of ammo
Easier to find replacement parts and ammo for
I'm more familiar with the feel of the 5.56 since I get to shoot it more often

    YMMV
