Default This Weekend 1812 Overture - Culture & Cannon

There have been a couple performances every summer of the 1812 Overture. One is in Clement Park in Littleton. One is Sweet Water Park in Lone Tree. This year, since they don't talk to each other they are both this Saturday. The lunatics - oops - hobbyists who have Civil War type cannon will be split between the two.

I think the one in Clement Park is the nicest. It's overlooking a lake and a pleasant way to spend a summer evening. This concert is 6 to 9. I'm not sure about Lone Tree. I'll be at Clement Park with my Mountain Rifle.

    Here's a link for Clement Park: http://www.ifoothills.org/summer_concerts.asp

In Watertown, NY they get a Firing Platoon or Battery from one of the Field Artillery units on Ft Drum. That's pretty neat to see.

There are a lot more of these events back east where people are more into Civil War and Revolutionary remembrance.

Just a reminder that this is in Clement Park 6 to 9 tonight. My cannon is all polished and on its trailer. (How many of you can say that?)

It could be a break from all the awfulness. I know people might be wary of crowds but I think community is important. This sort of evil thrives in isolation.

What exactly is this? Details if you would? Is it a concert of cannons fired to a tune or what?

    Thanks,

This actually a classical music piece meant to have cannon fired. Old type cannon since it was a commemoration of Napoleon's defeat.

Toward the end of it an assistant conductor will be working with the cannoneers and we'll fire in time with the music. Some cannon will go once and some twice. It leads to hustle if twice since it is under the time limit of modern standards for black powder cannon firing.

After the piece is over the cannon will fire one or two rounds. If two the first is a rolling volley down the line and the second is all at once.

This used to be most impressive years ago when people would come up from New Mexico and more local people took part but competing events and politics have reduced the number. Still it is fun for all - except dogs. Unless they are gun dogs leave them home.

Do you know how long the concert is? I guess I am wondering; how long of the classical piece do we have sit through until the guns go off? I am sure it is all amazing but I like the boom!
