Didn't his mom say the police "got the right guy" as in, she knew he'd lost it? Clearly she, and likely many others knew that he was off the wall, or getting close.... same thing with the Loughner fellow in AZ. We really need to get better mental health services in this country, for our ailing servicemen, as well as the distressed citizen. The stigma around ptsd, depression, anxiety, etc needs to change immediately.... if it doesn't these tragedies will continue and it leads to stricter gun control.

Had a girlfriend addicted to pain meds. Died last May. Couldn't get her help because of no ins or $$$. + she didn't care. Only thing to do was use the courts to force her to a hospital which was also almost impossible. Same goes to people with mental issues.

First my thoughts and condolences go out to the victims and families of this tragic event.

I heard about this morning thought to myself how "out of control" the news media was going to go and sure enough they did.

My mom, who I am not very close with and haven't spoken since last May '11 calls me concerned if I was okay and not at the theater. ???????? I told her I went to the range today as was planned a week ago and shot my AR's. She was in shock I would do that............

Little baffled at her thoughts but made me think how people who do not understand or are familiar might think watching the news.

This thread exploded like crazy and not much I can add since so many of my thoughts are right along with most of you guys.
I will add I am disgusted at the news media, politicians, and anti gun idiots who are using this tragedy to bring light to their personal agenda's.

This is scary, Aurora PD reports that the shooter identified himself as "the Joker" upon arrest. I fear we may not see an answer to the question why. If anyone knows much about the Dark Knight comics, the new Joker is the representation of chaos, there is no reason but to disrupt the status quo and create more chaos. Rewatch The Dark Knight and focus on Ledger's Joker, it might give some insight into the motives behind this sick fvck.

I think the shooting community needs to step up and stress to those not in the know that these "active shooters" that pull this depraved, heinous and horrible crap are a very small number of gun owners, like fraction of a percent. It's terrible that it takes a tragedy like this to bring us together, but like with Columbine, and 9/11 and other terrible events, it shows that we as Americans rise up and come together as one, and I think that is the one good thing that can come out of these horrible horrible acts. They need to try this guy as a terrorist.

Using round numbers (10 "active shooters" & roughly 55 million firearms owners in the US), 0.0000182% of firearms owners have committed this type of act. I certainly don't want to diminish the impact that this has on us as communities, families, and individuals but the general public needs to understand that we should be focusing on the mind behind the tool and not the tool itself.

I know I'm preaching to the choir but wanted to put a rough figure with your thought.

Thanks for sharing that... wow, that is a very very minute number.
I wish the anti's would stop with this illogical stupidity, guns don't kill people, people kill people.

I really wish the Aurora PD Chief would stop saying "clips," he said magazines earlier... nit picking I know. I feel so bad for the cops that arrived on scene first and drove people to the hospital in their cars, that is something I hope no one ever has to witness and experience. +1 to the brave folks with the LE, FD, and EMS that responded to this tragic event, and my prayers are also with them in hopes that they never have to go through something like this ever again, and they get the help needed to cope and know that from my experiences in combat in Afghanistan, this is something that stays with you forever and those images will never leave your mind and haunt you. I pray for everyone who had to go through this horrific experience.

I've heard about it all day when at work. Sad and tragic event, my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone affected by this.

I hope the guy that committed this gets the death penalty and burns in hell for what he did.

Would be nice if just for one day politicians, reporters, and everyone else didnt throw blame at gun owners or try to turn it political.
