there are lowers out there with the shelf already for a drop in auto sear.

the sear could have been fabricated, could have been bought illegally, or purchased from an M16 parts kit. Either way it would be illegal. But legality obviously had no meaning to James Holmes.
He also has the knowledge to create booby traps, possible firebombs from what I gather at his apartment.

A degree in biology and studying neuroscience means he has sort sort of knowledge on a lot of this stuff...and if he didn't some of his friends surely did.

Just wanted to clarify something. A D.I.A.S. is not simply "purchased from an M16 parts kit". It's an apparatus made to use in a receiver that does not have the third hole for the sear that makes full auto possible.

Just wanted to make that connection in case someone is reading this and thinks you can simply order a part that is commonly available that will drop into a semi-auto AR15 to make it fully automatic. D.I.A.S. are heavily regulated as a machine gun by the ATF. To make a m16 auto sear work in an ar15 you would need to modify the receiver to accept the auto sear or machine a D.I.A.S.

For real! Unless they were simple fireworks stand smoke bombs, where the heck did he get that stuff? I read that it was tear gas, too. What in the world?! Last time I checked, you can't just go to Bob's gun and pawn and buy tear gas grenades! I hope this is just a one time thing and doesn't spawn any copycats. What a mess. This guy needs to be well interrogated, to identify any possible links, and put to sleep when they're finished. Little kids and women? Seriously?!
