    Default Colorado Unemployment Question

It has been very slow at the auto repair shop I work at and I am thinking about moving on.

I get paid 40% commision on repair order labor and the shop pays for insurance.

I have asked to be laid off so I can collect unemployment but the owner/operator will not do so.

Is there any place to find out how to quit and still get unemployment? In my situation having no work to do should not be a reason to be denied but I would like to know for sure. I have checked the Colorado Unemployment website and couldn't find anything.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I received 2 unemployment in my life. One is in CA, and other one is in CO.

In California, I resigned once. I had to. Nothing of my fault, but too many legal issues happening. So, i resigned (long long story. it is worse than getting laid off). I did get an unemployement benefit for it.

In State of Colorado, it is actually much stricter to receive benefit than state of California. I kinda got laid off, and I did get a benefit. State of CO salary base is 14month. So, if you worked for 12month, they will average your 12month salary divide by 14month. Which is really a bummer, because state of CA base on highest paid quarter out of 4 quarter.

One good thing about CO unemployment is that you can file it electronically every 2 weeks.

Remember, do not get fired with your "fault" There are good probability that you may not receive the benefit.

    good luck

Here's a novel idea...why don't you work on finding another job instead of trying to figure out how to get paid for being unemployed? [poke]

Seriously, you are focusing on the wrong thing. You need to be thinking about landing a better job that will broaden your knowledge and increase income potential. Put a resume together and apply to better auto repair shops. If you need help with your resume or interview pointers, PM me and I will help. If you need someone to kick you in the a$$ and tell you to quit being lazy, PM HunterCO.

unemployment (or under-employment) is for when you lose your job for reasons beyond your control
    I.e. you get laid off

If you quit, or resign or get fired.
    you
    get
    NOTHING

if you aren't as busy as you used to be, you might have an under-employment claim
    feel free to call up

I see ads all over for auto-mechanics though, I would think you could get a job pretty easy.

That is one of the strangest posts I've ever seen. I lost my job about 12 years ago and was going through the process to collect unemployment, but I found a job before I received anything from the state. I've always been able to find another job before the government gets involved...because they move at the speed of government.

If you don't like your job, I'd prefer that you find another one before you start looking for a check from the state to stay at home.

I worked from the age of 15 until I was 43 and became disabled (really disabled not phony disabled like some people I've seen ) in that whole time I collected 1 1/2 unemployment checks. there is work out there you just have to look, hell I moved 1100 mile for a job. [pirate]

    wrong!

when I was laid off from that major United states Airline who filed for bankruptcy and who shall not be named.. I got more money for unemployment than I would ever stand to make at any available job.

This enabled me to search for a decent job. I finally settled for a job at 1/2 the rate I was making.. previously, only offers were at 1/3 the rate.

unemployment is NOT government assistance, it is money paid into an account by your previous employer.

if you want unemployment because you are too lazy to get off your ass and look for a job then you deserve neither.

Thanks for all the advice. Like I said I am thinking about moving on and am weighing different options. I like to consider all my options before I make a job change. Have you ever tried to move a 2000 pound tool box?
It takes a flat bed tow truck.

I don't live paycheck to paycheck and am not head over heels in debt so I don't have to take a job that I don't like. I've been twisting wrenches for over 20 years and have not had a job out of the auto and motorcycle repair industry. I am a professional mechanic/technition and not a parts replacer. I grew up on a farm in SW Nebraska and am not afraid to work. Believe it or not I can read, write, and comprehend a service manual. I do like to get paid for my skill and experience. I probably have a least $50,000 worth of tools. You never stop buying specialty tools to keep up with the harder to work on cars.

I may try to get a service adviser/writer job somewhere but I will not work for less than 25k a year plus insurance. Working on a commission basis doesn't pay the bills when there is no work and you can't get your co-workers to sell the job and get the right parts in a timely matter.

Thanks again for the advice and opinions. Hopefully the weather is good enough to go to the north shoot on saturday. Have fun!
