    Default Bill O'Reilly and guns

Anyone hear Bill O'Reilly on Fox tonight? He sounded like a real moron, arguing with a conservative congressman (name escapes me) that:

    - Holmes purchased 60,000 rounds (I heard 6,000 from several sources)
    - Using a vague term "heavy duty weapons", saying that all sales of "heavy duty weapons" should be reported to the FBI
    - At first, it sounded like Heavy duty weapons included bazookas and machine guns, but later on seemed to include any semi-automatic firearm
    - The congressman pointed out that the BATF is notified of firearm purchases, but O'Reilly seemed to disagree with that, including the tax stamp required to purchase machine guns
    - O'Reilly seemed incoherent and confused at times, very much on his soapbox that he had the solution to prevent mass murders. Was somewhat embarrassing to watch -while I don't think O'Reilly is conservative on many issues, I tend to agree with most of his positions. But not this one...

Never did like O'Reilly. Doesn't surprise me he came across that way.

I usually like his program but was surprised how misinformed he was.

Yes, I expected more from him. He has been spewing very little accurate information just like most of the media.

I just emailed him and bet him dinner on 3 different points.
Full auto BATF&E cert and chief LEO sign off.
    Artillery, mortars?
NRA and support of project exile.

I also told him that if dinner does now work he can donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Just sent the following note to OReilly:

    Bill,

As a regular watcher of the OReilly factor on Fox, I appreciate your usual understanding of most issues and asking insightful questions. However, on the Tuesday program you hosted Rep. Jason Chavetz (spelling?) for a discussion around Gun Control. While I respect your position, and understand it is significantly different than mine, it was painful to listen to your misstatement of facts.

You said many times that Mr Holmes had purchased 60,000 rounds of ammunition. This is clearly wrong, as the authorities have consistently stated that Mr Holmes had purchased 6,000 total rounds.
Here is just one reference; countless others are available:

If your point of view is that doesn’t matter, then why not just say 6 Trillion rounds or something equally irresponsible? As a legal gun owner and concealed carry permit holder, I practice shooting usually twice per week to keep my skills up. I generally shoot between 120 and 180 rounds each session, so an average of about 150 rounds. If I had 6,000 rounds in my possession, that would last approximately 20 weeks, not so very long. I do find it necessary (to me) to shoot that many rounds that often since I find I need to shoot often to keep my skills up and frankly I enjoy shooting (standing) as a change of pace from my office-based job in the legal field. Like many “antis” you seem to have a fixation and fascination with the number of rounds that someone owns. I don’t believe law-abiding and legal citizens owes you, or anyone else, an accounting of what they own.

You were also completely flummoxed by the background check and tax stamp/BATF requirements that Rep. Chavetz described. You sounded like an idiot describing a vague term you called “heavy duty weapons” or something like that which seemed to include artillery, mortars, and machineguns – and later seemed to include any semi-automatic firearm. Bill, pure and simple you are ignorant when it comes to firearms and really should study up on purchase requirements for handguns, rifles, and class III devices – and C&R (curio and relic) firearms. I frankly felt embarrassed for you. You are pretty quick to berate guests that don’t know what they were talking about. Unfortunately, this time you didn’t know what you were talking about and Rep. Chavetz did.

Bill, as one who genuinely does like and watch your program, you need to raise your game if you want to keep my respect and viewership.

    Best Regards
