As a professional graphic designer let me stop y'all right there. Photoshop (or The Gimp) is a photo manipulation tool, not a typesetting/flyer making program.

Unless you're designing for the web, stick with using Photoshop (or The Gimp) to edit the raster images you're going to put into your flyer.

A program like Adobe InDesign or Illustrator would be much better suited to the task but they aren't cheap, let alone free (well not legally anyway ).

Much like The Gimp is a free alternative to Photoshop, Inkscape is a free alternative to Illustrator and Scribus is a free alternative to InDesign. Neither is an acceptable substitute for the Adobe products in a professional environment, but either will do pretty much anything you need when it comes to making flyers, brochures, etc.

A very common & easy to use solution is Microsoft Publisher. If you, or anyone you know, has Microsoft Office then its very likely to have Publisher included in that package. If you're using someone else's computer then you can save it as a PDF, email it to yourself, then you can print copies from your own computer.

Publisher is the work of the devil.

Since you're pretty serious about publishing I can see where you'd think that, and probably be correct, but for a novice user with minimum requirements...

If you already have a copy of Publisher and you're not planning on producing anything that a commercial printer will have to print then Publisher will be fine. Otherwise, get something else.

No arguments from me there, as I am a graphic and instructional designer for a living too, but the average person can make a flyer just fine in Photoshop or GiMP. Of course I would rather create my type or graphics in Illustrator, edit my images in Photoshop, and then do the layout in InDesign though...

Are you freelance, or in house?

In house ... for now ... I work for an idiot who is busy running the business into the ground so I may be unemployed soon (at which time I'll call myself "freelance" ).

I would love to go freelance, but I tell you, working for a big company has it's perks, like a regular paycheck, heh
