Take whatever pistol you have, be it 9mm or whatever. It is better then throwing your hat at
a four legged animal or a 2 legged predator. Bear spray is also good to have.
So carry both. Have your GF or Wife ( I can not remember) carry a pistol too.
Bears have been killed with all kinds of rounds. I always have felt a round or 2 in the chops
meaning the tongue and throat will do more to deter with any firearm you have if you do not own a
    magnum caliber pistol.

Ummm Yeah there are plenty around there. My buddy and I were touring the park via street legal dirt bikes 2 years ago, came up to a traffic jam (they are constant) and low and behold there's a momma bear and her 2 cubs. Everyone else is in their cages (cars) and we're hanging our asses out in the breeze on the bikes.

So when momma gets tired of being the center of attention and decides to cross the road and go up the hill, guess where the most open area to cross is? You guessed it, right behind our back tires. Thankfully she wasn't mad, her and the cubs crossed the road literally about a foot behind our rear tires. That's why the following pictures are showing them in 2 different places, first two are the original position, second after they crossed. In between camera was hanging from my neck on the strap with me ready to ride over the Subaru in front of me if necessary.

Later in the day we came across another Sow and 2 cubs in another location close to the NE gate (Cooke City gate). After we got back from the trip we heard about an incident where a group of campers were mauled by a Sow and 2 cubs in a campground about a 1/4 mile from the 2nd location.

I have seen a grizley up close and personal there. Also remember bears arn't the only critter there that can be dangerous. Buffalo, elk, moose...they can all get mean when they want to.

Yeah, I've heard that buffalo are best to stay far away from, they can be rather grumpy. And you're right, ALL of them are dangerous. Even though they're fairly used to yammering humans all around them.

Hike from the Tahoe and take a 12ga. Buy some liability insurance. You would be better off killing a 2 legged retard than a black or grizzly bear in Yellowstone. Good Luck.
