I took my girlfriend and her son up to Yellowstone this spring. I had bear spray in my pack but I carried everywhere I went too. Four legged animals aren't the only ones I'm concerned with....

It is reported that bear spray is far more effective when dealing with grizzlys than a firearm.

That being said, you wouldnt catch me in that country without my .44 mag.

Don't forget Grand Teton too. My wife and I didn't care formYellowstone because there was way too many people but we really loved Teton.

    1) If you are legal to CCW why not have it with you.
    2) Bear spray will either deter a potential attack, OR season you just enough for the bear to enjoy a good meal (depending on your weight)

    3) grenades are bulky and that space could be used for water.

Go with gun and bear spray. Have a great time and don't forget your camera, you will be kicking yourself later. Don't ask me how i know.

Im going to agree with Jim here and say gun and bear spray and go one step further and advise you to invite someone to go with you or someone you meet up there to tag along as long as you are positive you are faster than they are.

+1! I love Teton. Yellowstone, meh... you are right, way too many people. But very beautiful nonetheless, both locations. The tourists (somehow Asians love Yellowstone) are just ridiculous... They're everywhere! Can't even see animals without wading through lookieloos.

Might want to check and see if they are trying to burn it down, before you go. (Went there '03, seems they were havin' a fire. Couldn't go in.)

If they are, head to Cody and hit the museum, The firearms part is more than worth three times what the trip costs.

Huge +1. That museum is very cool.

Take whatever pistol you have, be it 9mm or whatever. It is better then throwing your hat at
a four legged animal or a 2 legged predator. Bear spray is also good to have.
So carry both. Have your GF or Wife ( I can not remember) carry a pistol too.
Bears have been killed with all kinds of rounds. I always have felt a round or 2 in the chops
meaning the tongue and throat will do more to deter with any firearm you have if you do not own a
    magnum caliber pistol.
