Ak-74 sight in Questions

I have my 74 up and running know and would like to start sighting it in, but I have a few questions:

1. What is the upside down "U" On the back sight called?

2. What is the sight in distance for this position? Does it have 2 zero distances?

3. Any considerations I should take when sighting in?

4. I have a red dot that I will be placing on the Ultimak gas rail and I have never put one on a gun before. Any recomended zeros for the red dot?

1. Is your gun a russian saiga or Bulgarian? It is a cyrillic letter for P. Hoping Rachael Ray will correct me if I'm wrong.

2. Should be a standard 25m. I believe the Russians do this as well. 25m, 100m,200m

3. What ammo are you using? Is your barrel american or commie? Chrome lined or no? If your using just 7N6 you can find flyers every once in awhile. Other than that don't surprised by how accurate these guns can be.

4. I have found Ak's don't love gas rails sights.. I know a lot of peeps use them but I prefer my optics on the side rail.

It is a Bulgarian and it has a US barrel and is Chrome Lined and Using 7N6 ammo.

I believe the upside down "U" is for "battle sight". Basically the standard all around sight setpoint for most shooting. You will notice that when you go from 100M to "battle sight" that the sight will raise up a bit. I think battle sights is around 200-250 meters but I could be wrong.

The AK74 is probably my most accurate AK variant. It quickly becoming my "go to" gun.


When you go to sight your rifle in set your rear sight at 100M and set up your target at the same distance. When you start shooting to sight in your gonna adjust your FRONT SIGHT only. Once this is set you shouldn't have to touch it. This will set up your windage and elevation perfect. Double check at 200 meters and you should be good to go.

When adjusting the front sight. Moving the sight left will move the bullet left and Moving the sight Up will move the bullet Down? I have only sighted in my hunting riffle before which needed very little work and I will not lie I am primaraly a shotgunner.

The battle sight mark is a "p" basically (looks like an upside down u) it's roughly the same as the 400m setting on an ak74. I would sight it on the 100m setting at a 100m range if it were me

The "П" is "постоянная" "postoyanaya" which represents - constant , pi, 3.14, π. In simplified English - Battle zero. On AK-74 "constant" equals to 440 meters.
To zero: set your sight to <3> shoot at hundred meters (100 yards would be OK too) aim at the bottom of the target, all impacts should be 13 cm high.
This is standard Russian military zeroing technique.
