me "i have heard that before, sorry i always check," drop the mag and clear the chamber as he watched the live round come out and hit the ground.

Doesn't the side of the extractor claw stick out and have red paint on the top if a cartridge is chambered in it? I know recently I've started rubbing the extractor on my Glocks immediately before clearing them just to re-enforce the habit. If the M&P is the same, this might be something to add to this guy's re-education process.

actually i did not look for an indicator of any kind, just out of habit dropped the mag and cycled the chamber

The extractor doesn't stick out on the M&P, but there is a hole in the top that allows you to see brass in the chamber.

Just for redundancy sake: Treat all firearms as if they are loaded.

Call me anal retentive, but unless I check it, I don't consider it clear. Not an absolute, but I was taught that good etiquette is to drop the mag and lock the slide open before handing a semi-auto pistol to someone. Revolvers, open the cylinder and pass it while grasping the top strap.

OK. I thought there was a way to do a chamber check, just couldn't remember what it was for the M&P.

Still a good idea to tell him this though. Sounds like he needs all the help he can get.
