He was. He's contending that the plagiarism was just a pretense and he was really being fired for his bold first-amendment touting stance.

Note he's not saying he didn't plagiarize - just that he thinks his plagiarism didn't warrant firing, so the "first amendment" grounds must have been the real issue. Which is funny, since plagiarism is just about the worst academic crime one can commit.
