I'm thinking of mounting a Burris Mtac 1-4, to provide some distance versatility assistance for my old eyes. How big a sacrifice do you feel I'd be making when operating it at 1 power, in comparison to a non magnified eotech or aimpoint. In what form would that sacrifice come?

I have two. Great optic for the price and the versatility is also great. Just a bit heavier than an aimpoint, eotech, etc. (less so if you add a magnifier)


Some people will say the eotech is faster. While the eotech might give an edge, Truth is, practice is faster.

Eye relief. Head position is going to be less critical on the EOTech.

As mentioned, practice is the cure.

I don't think it is a sacrifice at all. I attended a Magpul Dynamics class with a 1-4 optic on my gun. I kept up with all the eotech guys all day every day. In fact we ran the Vickers 1-5 drill. I lost to one guy by .03 seconds, he had an eotech.

I'm pretty sure there my have been one or two that could hit with their eotechs at 500 yards, but no more. I can all day.

Just be sure to get your eye relief and stock length right. I have an eotech on one of my carbines that is going to get a magnifier with QD mount to give me (my wife) the ability to get to 3X in a bit more time to run my Leupold up to 4X.

The only other draw back is weight.

Thanks for the feedback, goodburbon, Tim k, low drag. I could see where the smaller parameters of eye relief could be an issue in stress situations, but as you say it can be overcome with practice. That's what I'll do. Worth it for the range advantages.

Might not need to make longer range shots often, but if I do, I want it to be there and solid. If I can have that advantage without sacrificing in close operability, then it's a no brainer decision.

The eye releif is very forgiving on the MTACs and even shooting occluded, there is no discernable parallax out to about 100 yards. Plus, if your battery dies, you are not SOL.

This. The price point is easy on the wallet and i like being able to see without squinting because the eye relief is small. I have an Eotech, very nice very fast target acquisition, down side was in 3 gun being able to see the 1 & 200 yd targets. The burris offers magnification for the distance and as mentioned if the battery craps out, no issues.
