    With the exception of plastic guns, I'm sure a soak in any commercial paint remover will remove a rattle can paint job.

    Not much original finish left to worry about. Only the grips are polymer/plastic.

    If you are going to have it refinished it will have to be media blasted. Whatever you use as a test finish will die by abrasive media firing squad.

    I was hoping you would chime in, because you are the one who is going to apply the 'for real' coat.
