They replace the broken or wore out pieces such as springs and parts on the bolt carrier groups.
They are returned to servicable condition and reissued.

The military has many levels of maintenance. a lot of weapons go to depot level where they are completely refurbed. We had a few M2s that had been through several wars. If they cannot be fixed at depot level then they are destroyed.

The current supply of toys like aimpoints and ACOGs from Iraq were left there and signed over to DoS. Trust me...you don't want them.
