Default CSPD now carrying M&P 9mm

I had an officer come into my work yesterday to buy a coffee pot. I noticed he was carrying the M&P. I asked his thoughts on the gun, he says they are a great improvment over their 5906's and that all officers will start recieving them.

Congrats CSPD on your new gun.

yes as soon as the 5" pro hits the shelves I will own one. It might replace the Beretta for some match use.

    Better than the 5906...

My brother teaches at the CSPD Academy. Loves it. He has had it for several months.

The new .45s are pretty slick.

I was talking to my brother last night and he told me they were getting rid of their pos 5906's and going to the M&Ps. He was pretty happy about that only because he hates the 5906. We got on the discussion because I'm debating replacing the 5906 that was stolen in my homes break-in (I liked the 5906) and was asking him why he likes his Glock. I just want a 15ish round gun for around the house. I'm looking at inexpensive if I replace my stolen 9mm because technically I already replaced it with the HK compact .45 I bought and it wasn't cheap. But I don't see why I can't replace it with another large capacity gun. I've been explaining to wifey why I HAVE to replace all my guns that were stolen, and the HK was just a temp fix until the insurance check got here. (I know you all can see my logic there)

Anyway he suggested looking here http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/index.php
because they have good pricing. He likes the M&P they have been test firing much more then the 5906, but still wishes they would let him carry his own choice. He does carry his Glock .40 as a backup. He suggested I buy the M&P .40 or .45 since he doesn't like the stopping power of the 9mm. I do believe he said the ones they are getting are 9mm.

edited to add: I did ask if any CSPD officers were still using revolvers and he said their is one older lady cop who does. He says they laugh about that.

They are still using the 9x19. Same ammo as before. Thought it was Winchester Ranger of some sort. Its some pretty spicy stuff. Good track record on the street. There is no magic bullet/caliber out there. Good hits stop, bad hits dont.

The conversion is gonna take a while. Several years.

A while back someone in the dept suggested they go to the Spongefield XD, or should I say the made in Croatia and imported by Spongefield, HS2000. That would have been a bad choice. Hell, I would shoot a 5906 or a revolver over a XD anyday.

Speaking of, never underestimate a revolver. No slide to get caught on things, do disconnector so contact shots are doable, if a round doesn’t go bang, no tap-rack crap to go through, ect. A 5 inch 627 with 8 rounds of 357 would be a good duty gun if the officer liked revos.

For at least six years I carried a S&W model 19 revolver. Six in the gun, and two speedloaders, total of 18 rounds. I never felt outgunned or undergunned. I saw some one shot stops with .357 magnum rounds. I have seen several one shot no-stops with 9mm. (Granted shot placement counts for something.)

Now the state issues me a Glock 23 and 165gr JHP Hydrahocks. Three magazines for a total of 40 rounds on my belt. I still don't feel undergunned or underarmed, but I would still be happy with my old revolver.

The only thing we don't like about the M&P is the magazine disconnect safety. I don't know if CSPD got those or not, but I hope not. They also have been slowly swapping out to newer holsters as well. The sights are okay, and the backstrap options are nice too. I have held one, but not shot one.

My brother said yes, it does have the mag safety. He likes that feature because he has the back up gun available quickly so if a bad guy gets the gun he can release the mag and it's then just a club. The site I posted has the M&Ps without the mag safeties.
