The most dangerous man I know, who generally works in Africa, listened to the ammunition debate going on amongst stateside gun owners before finally blowing up. It was pretty amazing - he was never the guy go off but he'd had enough.
His comment?
"Nobody I ever shot in the fucking face got back up and said 'If that had been a fourty-five I woulda been in trouble...'"
At which point he grabbed his packed bags and left for South Africa again.
I remember a friends grand father telling me a story about WWII during the war he had picked up a german luger off a dead German. He carried it thru the war and used it, he told us he liked it more than his 1911--- (GASP) and stated it was more accurate, he further stated he had shot and killed many Germans with it and that "Not one of them jumped up complaining that I(HE) didn't use enough gun"...
Put's a grin on my face everytime i think of that story.
The whole ammo debate erks me...
The 5.7 is a total joke.... wow a pistol that holds 20+1
Hmm... let me think XDM-9 holds 19+1 Close enough AP ammo also- Sweet
Hmm... Glock 17 with a +2 base plate= 19+1 and same avail. ammo...
9mm XDM or GLOCK
Pro
light recoil
Half price of the 5.7 pistol
Ammo cheap
HP/SD ammo is effective
Armor pearcing ammo is available!
mags are affordable/easy to find
holsters easy to find
Con's
Can't really think of one...
5.7
Pro's
holds 20+1
light recoil
Cons
Pistol is twice what a glock or XDM cost
Ammo is very expensive
"AP" not available to Civillians
Mags are difficult do find and costly
holsters not common
Seems to me that the type of people who profess the 5.7 to be a laser death-ray are also the guys who will expound at great length about how the M4 is a terrible combat weapon because of it's lack of stopping power.
Shot placement is what counts. Always has, always will.

lol - I actually shoot a 5.7. got a great deal on it.
I didn't think much of it until 2 things happened.
1. I spoke with the people cleaning up the fort hood mess.
2. I shot it enough to realize it's world class accurate. it is easily on par with my match 45.
I've got a buddy whose SWAT team (Jacksonville FL) got P90s. After shooting some folks with them they switched back to ARs because of the P90s poor performance on people.
RE the Ft Hood shooting.
I would suggest that surprise was the single biggest factor in the casualty count. In my experience there is a significant difference in reaction when you shoot someone who knows they are in a fight versus shooting someone who has no idea it's coming.
Maj Hassan attacked 300 unarmed troopers and had something like 14 min unopposed. I don't think it makes a very realistic case study for the effectiveness of a particular weapon in a self defense shooting.

i agree with you mick-boy.... Many Many swat teams went yo the P90's only for a short time until they figured out the ballistics were less than impressive and most went back to the M4 platform
