I wouldn't run an ar without one but i also carry more than one ccw. I have had to use the forward assist once on mag 6 in a sandy place but just remember what you will and can use it for matters.
If i only had one ar it would have a forward assist if I had many i could justify a slick side but it would never be the go to gun imho

I have a S&W AR that doesn't have the forward assist, believe its the sportier model. Never felt like I needed it and its never had a hiccup.

To the OP's original concern about the original 16's failing in combat.
It was not due to the rifle, it was due to a decision by a pollytickian to save money.
Defense Secretary Robert McNamera(sp) decided to:
1-change the powder specifications to use surplus powder from the Korea era. The stick powder that was originally spec'd out was fairly clean burning but the ball powder that it was changed to fouled horribly.
2-not issue cleaning kits. It was claimed that the rifle was "self cleaning".

The forward assist was added as a "fail safe".

I have a Colt SP1 that I picked up at a hell of a deal a while back and just got it to turn around and sell it...but then got attached to it. No FA and no issues. I like it a lot. I also don't use the FA or I should say never been in a situation to use the FA on my Duty Colt AR or my Bushmaster AR

X2 - M&P 15 Sport flat top, no dust cover or FA but has Shell defelctor. I am not in combat or desert, clean the weapon after each use and use good ammo - no issue and I like the look better anyway.

Great rifle, the only inconvenience is that they have non-mil-spec buffer tube, so if you want a custom stock you need to look for the commercial ones. other than that, very smooth action, better than Bushmaster now days IMO.
I was so tempted to get another one from Jensens, but was short on funds. I might wait longer to see if they will make 20 inch ones.

In all seriousness, I wish someone made an AR upper without the forward assist but WITH the ejection port cover.
    Someone does,

    Shell deflector, no FA.

The charging handle stick out that far is meant to act as a forward assist when needed.
