In the past, I've needed a forward assist. I was very glad it was there. It was my own stupid fault for needing it; I got caught up in the 'it's a desert environment and you don't want a bunch of lube on your gun' that the Army teaches.

Single scariest moment of my life, but I lived.

The moral of that story is that since then I've kept my duty rifle lubed like a son-of-a-gun. Almost disgustingly dripping wet with lube. I haven't needed one since then, but others have had problems with their rifles. In a pinch, we used diesel engine oil with some ATF mixed in there.

Keep it lubed and it will run.

if you need a forward assist while at the range, something is terribly wrong. in combat I can see the need, but when you are shooting targets, you are going to live if you don't jam an out of spec round into the chamber to get it to fire.

you aren't in a life or death scenario. If you are planning on such a situation, make sure you shoot the gun beforehand and get it where you want it at.

other than that, there isn't a need unless you plan on shooting terrible ammo and not cleaning your gun for several thousand rounds.
All I have in this world is my balls and my word and I don't break em for no one.

As long as you keep it dripping wet like stated above, and with ammo manufactures producing consistent quality ammo I haven't had to use one in the last 25000 rounds.
On a qual range you do need to tap it to score an aliaby or a reshoot but it's not needed
