You can ferment for your home use without license, tax, or paperwork. In Colorado, I think you can go up to 100 gallons of beer or wine per year.
Distillation requires a license no matter how little you make or who ends up drinking it.

I researched this a while back. Not legal unless you get a licence, etc. Too bad. I thought it would be fun to make some whiskey.
There is an outfit in Denver that sells stills and equip, but I guess those are only used for making distilled water.![]()
